2023 Open Program

In 2023, Ballarat International Foto Biennale celebrates its 10th edition running 26 August to 22 October.

Registrations for the 2023 Open Program are now closed.

The Open Program is an opportunity for emerging and new photographers to present an exhibition at the Ballarat International Foto Biennale. Formerly known as the Fringe Program, it has been an integral part of the festival since its inception in 2005. 2023 Open Program exhibitors will be featured in the Festival Guide both print and online, promoted through our social media channels, and be in the running for a $2,000 AUD First Prize and a $500 AUD People’s Choice Award.


Benefits to Artists

Artists who register for the 2023 Open Program will receive these benefits:

  • A detailed Open Program Artist Pack filled with tips for managing the production of your exhibition.
  • Templates for A3 and A4 exhibition introduction panel signage and a template for artwork labels.
  • A window decal sticker to display at your venue.
  • Your exhibition venue will receive a standard A-frame sign to promote your exhibition during opening hours.
  • Opportunity to sell your work in partnership with your venue.
  • Support from the Open Program Coordinator when needed.
  • Invitation to the artist party event on opening night, Saturday 26 August.
  • Complimentary Friends of the Biennale membership, valid until 30 June 2024. Membership includes exclusive discounts on festival tickets, events and exclusive shopping days in the Festival Hub and a subscription to the BIFB newsletter.
  • First prize of $2,000 (ex.GST) judged by a panel of leaders and creative industry professionals.
  • People’s Choice Award of $500 (ex.GST). Voting is conducted online via the BIFB website.
  • Inclusion in the official 2023 Festival Guide (30,000 copies printed and distributed in Victoria).
  • Individual promotion cards for visitors displayed in the Festival Hub (cards will include the artist image and text as provided for the Festival Guide).

Open Program Fees

Participation in the Open Program is secured by the payment of an Open Program Fee

  • Artist Registration $440 (inc.GST)
  • Student Artist Registration $360 (inc.GST)
